Hexagonis hand built to the finest standards using military spec components. We have designed this switch box in such a way that there are NO hookup wires. All components, including the precision ELMA selector switch, gold plated RCA sockets and Nutrik XLR sockets, are mounted directly to their respective printed circuit boards. This is keeps the possibility of any noise pickup to the absolute minimum.
The only wires are from the IEC power inlet to the shielded toroidal power transformer and on/off switch, and from the transformer to the printed circuit board. A lot of time and careful thinking has gone into the design, layout, and build of Hexagon.
Hexagon's circuit was designed to keep background noise to zero. Afterall, we do not wish to introduce any unwanted noise or interference into the stereo system setup. To that end we opted to go all soild state, as this is the only way to ensure a noise-free circuit.
We use the INA2134 op-amp as a differential op-amp, which converts the incoming balanced signal to an unbalanced one with ease and at extremely low total harmonic distortion of 0.0005% @ 1KHz.
For the unbalanced RCA inputs, we use the excellent OPA2134PA op-amp as a unity gain, non-inverting buffer. We chose to use this op-amp, with its total harmonic distortion of 0.00003% @ 1KHz, instead of simply connecting the unbalanced signal directly to the selector switch. You end up with a very high input impedance and a very low output impedance. This has the benefit of allowing the use of longer cable runs to the preamp without any chance of degrading high-frequency response.
The bi-polar power supply uses low noise voltage regulators with plenty of filtering for a clean, no background noise power supply for the op-amps.
Only high quality components are used in the construction of Hexagon. All power supply electrolytic capacitors are Nichicon gold series audio grade units. XLR sockets are high quality Nutrik and RCA sockets are gold plated.
The selector switch is an ELMA fully-sealed unit with gold plated contacts, and is connected via a stainless steel shaft running through a mini ball bearing to the front panel and selector knob.
The printed circuit boards are designed in house and manufactured to FR4-TG standards. They are double layer with full ground planes on both sides to ensure complete screening of the circuits.
Total harmonic distortion is 0.0005% at 1KHz
